Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown Visits Mid-Ohio FoodBank

(from left) Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown with Matt Habash, president and CEO of Mid-Ohio Foodbank. In a March 19 visit to Mid-Ohio FoodBank, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown announced that he has sponsored an amendment to the Senate budget bill that provides $40 million for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) to help foodbanks across the country cope with huge loses in commodities supplied by federal food programs.

Brown has been working to secure the funding for TEFAP to address the food bank crisis until a permanent fix can be passed in the Farm Bill.  “Negotiators are continuing to work through House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill to reconcile differences and to settle on a measure that will gain President Bush’s support,” said Senator Brown.

Matt Habash, president and CEO of Mid-Ohio FoodBank, said, “The decrease in food from the federal government has left a huge hole in our supply.  We’ve seen a 32 percent decrease in the last three years—over 2.9 million pounds. Getting additional USDA commodities into our system is critical if food pantries are to have well-stocked shelves with sufficient staples for the increasing number of families they are helping.”

“The wealthiest nation in the world cannot allow its people to go hungry,” said Brown. “Working Americans who cannot afford to adequately feed their families, elderly individuals who worked hard all their lives but cannot survive on Social Security—they deserve to be a priority.”

Delivery of 18,000 dozen eggs donated by Hillandale Farms/Ohio Fresh Eggs and Ft. Recovery Equity.A donation of 18,000 dozen eggs arrived at  Mid-Ohio FoodBank just in time for the Easter season.  Ohio egg producers Hillandale Farms/Ohio Fresh Eggs and Ft. Recovery Equity supplied the eggs as part of a statewide donation to Ohio foodbanks coordinated by the Ohio Poultry Association.

“The availability of fresh eggs at the Foodbank is so important,” said Matt Habash, president of Mid-Ohio FoodBank.  “Eggs are a versatile, high protein item, and protein is always the hardest food category for our Foodbank to supply.  Eggs are easy to prepare and supply key nutrients and easily digestible protein.”  The  donation will go a long way to help needy families throughout the Foodbank’s 20 county service area in central and eastern Ohio according to Habash.

Eggs in warehouse awaiting distribution.Six Ohio egg producers are making egg donations to foodbanks throughout Ohio this spring as a part of a national commitment by United Egg Producers to provide eggs to foodbanks across the country.  “Our company is honored to help Ohioans who are less fortunate,” said Gary Bethel, general manager of Hillandale Farms/Ohio Fresh Eggs in Akron and Croton, Ohio.  The farm is one of the nation’s leading suppliers of shell eggs.

Round-Up from the Heart

Round-Up from the Heart program logo

The Pampered Chef is expanding its Round-Up from the Heart charitable giving campaign from a six month program to a year-long campaign. Throughout the year, customers can contribute to the campaign in several ways. They can round up their purchase totals at in-home cooking demonstrations to the nearest dollar or more. All funds then are sent to local food banks, making this a national campaign with local impact.

Area Pampered Chef representatives recently visited the Foodbank to see how all their hard work helps those in need.

The local impact at Mid-Ohio FoodBank has been tremendous. Pampered Chef consultants have raised over $68,000 to help us serve 20 central and eastern Ohio counties.

Pampered Chef customers also can purchase four limited edition collectible Stoneware cookie molds themed Seasons of the Heart. For each cookie mold purchased, The Pampered Chef will donate $1 to the national office of America's Second Harvest.

For more information about Round-Up from the Heart, contact Mary McLoughlin at (614) 850-9965.
