| Feeding Kids All Year Long | ||
In
the last few weeks, children all across central Ohio returned to school.
While many children complain about losing their summer freedom, for others,
school is the only place where they are guaranteed a meal. Thirty-seven
percent of those served by Mid-Ohio FoodBank’s network of pantries are
children. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that more than 12
million children are at-risk of hunger in the United States.Brandon is
one of these children. He lives with his mom Amanda, a single mother just
out of high school. According to Amanda, “My friends are only college
students, but they bring a bag of groceries by now and then.” A local pantry
in Licking County keeps food on their table when times are really tight, and
Brandon will be starting school soon which means free school lunches. |

eastern Ohio, and we need your help to provide a special meal for families

| 4 Million Meals for Operation Feed! | ||
What do a charter school, a design/build firm and one of the largest companies
in central Ohio have in common? These groups represent just a few of the 160
organizations that participated in the 2007 Operation Feed Campaign. Each
organization involved had their own unique way of raising food and funds –
children exchanged a canned good for the privilege of not wearing their
school uniform for a day; one company held a peanut butter and jelly
sandwich sale with celebrity sandwich makers; another held a canned goods
structure competition. There was even a “can your supervisor” event using
canned goods as votes - the “winner” spent some time in a dunk tank! Steve Davis, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Bob Evans Farms, Inc., and the 2007 Operation Feed Campaign Chair, hosted a recognition breakfast to honor and thank all of those who participated in this year’s effort. We are thrilled to announce that through the collective efforts of those involved and with a special gift by Bob Evans Farms, we reached the 2007 campaign goal of raising 4 million meals to help feed hungry children, families and senior citizens in central Ohio. Eleven companies were also recognized at the breakfast for their outstanding campaign efforts. Receiving special awards were: • Open Text Corporation – Most Meals per Capita • 121st Air Refueling Wing – Largest Percentage Increase • Bob Evans Farms, Inc. – Director’s Choice Award • American Electric Power/IBEW 1466 – Award of Excellence • American Signature Inc. – Award of Excellence • Columbus Children’s Hospital – Award of Excellence • Columbus Public Schools – Award of Excellence • Kraft Foods North America – Award of Excellence • Nationwide – Award of Excellence • Park National Bank – Award of Excellence • R.G. Barry Corporation – Award of Excellence If you want to find out how your organization can join in on the fun of Operation Feed while helping to feed hungry people in central Ohio, contact Joan Casto, Operation Feed Campaign Director, at 614-274-7770 or jcasto@secondharvest.org. |

| Golfing for Good | ||
|
When you have a good heart, no one cares what your golf handicap is. One hundred fifty local golfers came together on August 13th at the Medallion Club this year and netted over $123,000 for Second Servings. Don DePerro, publisher of Business First, chaired the event. Alliance Data Systems, Altria, Business First, H.R. Gray, Kraft Foods, M/I Homes, Ruscilli Construction, and Worthington Industries were major sponsors of the event. |

| Cornucopia Club | ||
In
late July, Mid-Ohio FoodBank introduced a special new club for financial
donors. Cornucopia Club recognizes individuals who donate $1,000 or more
during the fiscal year (July-June). Club members received a welcome letter and special quarterly newsletter, Plenty, and are eligible for other member benefits, such as invitations to special briefings with the executive director, seminars, and volunteer events. The cornucopia symbolizes abundance, and is the perfect image to recognize those individuals who care so deeply about providing hungry central and eastern Ohioans with plentiful and nutritious food, so that they may function, learn, work, and simply live their lives without fear of food insecurity. Individual major donors make a significant commitment to fighting hunger, and deserve to be recognized for their special efforts. If you are interested in becoming an individual major donor, or have questions about major gifts or your current fiscal year giving totals, please contact Cathy Barr, major gifts manager at cbarr@secondharvest.org, or by phone at 614-274-7770 ext. 224. |

A U.S. census report released in August told us that many of our neighbors in
Ohio are still struggling. A fifth of Columbus’ population lives below the
poverty rate – which is only $20,444 for a family of four. Those most vulnerable to poverty and hunger are children. About 18%, or 515,000, of Ohioans under 18 live in poverty. The census also told of over a million Ohioans not covered by health insurance. Mid-Ohio FoodBank is working tirelessly to make sure that no one has to suffer from hunger in this country of great abundance. |

| Volunteer Focus | ||
How
did Teleperformance USA became involved in a company-wide volunteer
initiative? Tonya Petitti-Koelling, manager in Human Capital Resource
Management, told us about “Citizens of the World,” a program focusing on
giving back to the community via monetary donations, in-kind services, food
and volunteers.Care Services Divisional President in Columbus, Kelly McBride, asked the Columbus employees to vote on opportunities available at several different nonprofits. According to Tonya Petitti-Koelling, “The Foodbank led the pack because the people they help crosses all genders, races, religions and social barriers.” Looking for volunteer opportunities that help many diverse groups? Call the Foodbank at (614) 274-7770. |
